RALEIGH -- A Raleigh man with Goldsboro ties will be charged with drunken driving, driving the wrong way and felony death by motor vehicle after he was involved in an accident Sunday that killed an elderly couple.

Ray Norman Rouse IV was driving west in the eastbound land of Wade Avenue when he struck a vehicle driven by Ormond Jackson Bailey near the Glenwood Avenue exit.

Bailey, 83, and his wife, Gaynell Batton Bailey, 79, died at Wake Medical Center from their injuries.

According to a Raleigh police report, Rouse, 34, also was hospitalized, and is in critical condition. Authorities said he would be charged with the traffic violations when he is released from the hospital.

Wake County Assistant District Attorney Jeff Cruden said two warrants charging Rouse with felony death by motor vehicle also would be served on Rouse upon his release.

Police records show that Rouse, a Goldsboro native, had been charged with drunken driving three times previously.

He pleaded guilty to DWI in Durham County after a September 2001 arrest. Similar charges were dismissed against him in April 2005 in Wake County and February 2006 in Wake County, according to court records.
