The Wayne County chapter of the American Red Cross will host its annual Heroes Kickoff event Thursday beginning at noon at First Pentecostal Holiness Church at 1100 The First Church Road.
The kickoff will feature guest speaker Dave Sanderson, the last passenger off USAirways Flight 1549 -- also known as the "Miracle on the Hudson."
When the jet made an emergency landing in the Hudson River on Jan. 15, 2009, Sanderson stationed himself to assist others in spite of the danger. Sanderson emerged from the wreckage with a mission -- to encourage others to do the right thing.
Sanderson will share the story of Flight 1549, revealing the inner strength it took to make it through that day. Sanderson will explain how teamwork, leadership and state management can help overcome any obstacle.
The kickoff marks the start of the chapter's Heroes Campaign held during March in honor of presidentially declared, National Red Cross Month.
Each year, the Red Cross honors real, local heroes in the community as part of the Heroes Campaign. Heroes for the American Red Cross is a grassroots fundraising and awareness campaign that gives community members the chance to make a big, lasting difference by raising vital funds to help those in need.
