Norwayne Middle School marked its fifth year winning the Battle of the Books contest, Friday at Goldsboro High School.

This year, 10 middle schools from around the county participated in the 27th annual event, where Wayne County Public Schools students were able to test their reading skills.

Battle of the Books, a quiz bowl style competition that encourages reading, is specifically designed for students, grades 6 through 8. Contestants must read 27 books chosen by a statewide committee, and the competition tests students' comprehension of the books.

Recognizing that reading comprehension is a fundamental skill needed in every subject area across every grade level, administrators state that the Battle of the Books competition is an effective program for encouraging students to immerse themselves in reading.

"Students participating in the Battle of the Books competition have been preparing for months, under the guidance of their school's media coordinator, to master and absorb the content of their required readings. They also work to sharpen their reading comprehension skills through practice competitions held in their school's media center," said Olivia Pierce, WCPS executive director for information/technology services.

Schools participating this year included Brogden, Dillard, Eastern Wayne, Grantham, Greenwood, Mount Olive, Norwayne, Rosewood, Spring Creek and Wayne School of Engineering.
