Injuries, but no deaths, in train/car collision

Emergency workers and firefighters remove one of two victims from a car after it was struck by a southbound CSX freight train at the intersection of South Center Street and County Road on Monday afternoon in Mount Olive. They were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries. After the car turned in the path of the train and was hit, it came to rest in a ditch about 60 feet away. The intersection had warning lights but no stop arms.
MOUNT OLIVE -- A southbound CSX freight train struck a car that turned into its path in south Mount Olive on Monday.
The late model Chevrolet Impala driven by Chianti Mulmer of Mount Olive tried to cross the intersection at County Road soon after 2 p.m. when the accident occurred.
The driver and passenger Zachary Delien were injured and taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not known.
The impact tossed the car across a ditch and it came to rest about 60 feet away from the tracks.
Mount Olive Police Officer Kelly Grady said Mulmer would be charged, but he did not specify what charges she would face.
Railroad officials said the train was traveling at its legal posted speed.
"I guarantee you he was going line speed," the CSX official said. Line speed, he added, is 40 mph.
Police did not say how fast the Impala was going at the time of the impact, but they did say that both victims were conscious and communicating with emergency workers when they were pulled from the wreckage.
