Roughly one year ago, when he was just 16 years old, Ishmael Jamal Bunch overpowered two Juvenile Justice Transportation officers and escaped their custody.
According to press releases issued at the time by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Bunch escaped along U.S. Highway 70 on the way back to Concord and the Stonewall Jackson Training School, a juvenile detention center, after attending court in Goldsboro.
A Wayne County grand jury decided this month that he will stand trial for the escape and the assault against the officers.
Bunch, 6 foot, 5 inches tall and 200 pounds at the time of the escape, went on a bit of a rampage once free.
He fled to a nearby neighborhood and broke into a home on Leslie Road. There he allegedly used the very handcuffs he had escaped from to subdue the homeowner, met up with two accomplices and robbed the home. The trio then fled and holed up in a Rollingwood residence until they were located later that night and arrested.
Bunch, already facing the escape and assault charges. also was charged with second-degree kidnapping, breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, common law robbery and possession of stolen goods. No trial date has so far been set.
