Battle re-enactment set for this weekend

The Goldsborough Bridge battlefield is seen early today. The location was the site of an December 1862 clash between Union and Confederate troops for control of the strategic railroad bridge over the Neuse River.

It has been nearly 150 years, but the legacy left by those who fought at the Civil War Battle of the Goldsborough Bridge lives on.

A two-day re-enactment will unfold this weekend to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Dec. 17, 1862 battle.

The schedule of events is as follows:

Saturday

* 8 a.m. -- Battlefield open to the public

* 10 a.m. -- Camps open to the public

* 2 p.m. -- Battle Re-enactment

* 4 p.m. -- Camps close to the public

* 5 p.m. -- Battlefield closed to the public

Sunday

* 8 a.m. -- Battlefield open to the public

* 10 a.m. -- Camps open to the public

* 1 p.m. -- Battle Re-enactment

* 5 p.m. -- Battlefield closed to the public

The Battle of Goldsborough Bridge unfolded at the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad Bridge across the Neuse River, three miles south of Goldsboro, when Union forces tried to cut the railroad link between Wilmington and Virginia.
