Rash of holiday break-ins
Goldsboro Police received almost 30 reports of items being stolen from Wednesday through Saturday afternoon.
There were 28 reports of instances of larceny, breaking and entering and shoplifting during the latter part of the week, attributed mainly to holiday crime spikes due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions by securing their homes and vehicles during the holidays, when there tends to be an increase in theft.
Extortion scam
Goldsboro Police are investigating a report of extortion filed by Kenneth Barnes of South Andrews Avenue Friday.
Barnes, 60, told police that an unknown male called him on his cell phone and said his son had been in a car accident.
The caller said he was holding his son hostage and that he would hurt him if he didn't send $900 to him via Western Union.
Barnes said the caller sounded Hispanic and would not allow him to hang up.
He wired the money to Alsred Torres Carrcicini of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and paid a $100 surcharge for the transfer.
Barnes later found out his son had not been in a wreck or kidnapped.
