Wayne County commissioners Monday morning will meet in special session for second readings on two rezoning requests. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the commissioners meeting room on the fourth floor of the county courthouse annex.

National Salvage has asked the county to rezone approximately 54 acres at 430 Old Mount Olive Highway. The property is located on the south side of Old Mount Olive Highway between the CSX railroad tracks and Genoa Road from Light Industry to Heavy Industry.

James B. Sasser has asked to rezone one lot at 210 Genoa Road totaling about 35,600 square feet on the south side of Genoa Road between the CSX railroad tracks and Woodland Acres Avenue from Residential Agriculture 30 to Village District.

Both items were approved by 5-0 votes during the board's meeting last Tuesday. But since the full board was not present -- Commissioners Bud Gary and J.D. Evans were absent -- a second vote is required.

The need for the second vote was not mentioned until after last week's board meeting.

The second vote does not have to be unanimous for the requests to be approved.

The request by National Salvage is time-sensitive, Clayton Walters, the company's general manager told commissioners last week.

The rezoning is needed so that the company can close on the property by Wednesday and so that the state can proceed with necessary air quality permitting.

The company plans to use an existing facility to take in railroad cross ties and poles and turn them into mulch.

It is expected to open in the first quarter of 2013.

Sasser plans to maintain his residence at 210 Genoa Road, but also use it to open a used car business.

The Wayne County Planning Board has recommended approval of both requests.

In an unrelated matter, the Wayne County Board of Elections will meet in special session Monday at 9 a.m. as well. The meeting will be held at the county Administration Building, 209 S. William St.
