Gail Mason named Math Teacher of Year in Wayne

Gail Mason, an eighth-grade math and algebra teacher at Mount Olive Middle School, has been named 2012-13 Wayne County Public Schools' outstanding school mathematics teacher of the year.
She has spent the last nine years at Mount Olive Middle and has been in the profession for 16 years.
She was recognized during last Monday night's Board of Education meeting.
"Mrs. Mason is a leader in mathematics," board member Arnold Flowers said during the board spotlight. "She has assisted and facilitated district- and school-level professional development, assisted with the development of the district's pacing guides for eighth grade math, and served on the district's common core rollout team.
"In addition, she has represented the district at Common Core Summer Institute in Kinston, a regional Race to the Top activity in Duplin County, and the Total Instructional Alignment Curriculum Mapping Institute, also held in Duplin County."
The educator is a member of the N.C. Council for Teachers of Mathematics and Professional Educators of North Carolina.
In addition to her regular curriculum, Flowers said Mrs. Mason has worked to help engage students in the subject by holding an all-day math event for eighth graders called "Pi Day" and promoting student math projects and work being on display for the community during the district's annual math/science week at Berkeley Mall.
Mrs. Mason received her bachelor's degree in middle grades education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She is also a National Board Certified teacher in early adolescent mathematics.
As the district's representative, Mrs. Mason was recently recognized at the annual N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics, or NCCTM, math conference.
