The Southern Wayne High School student arrested last week for allegedly having drugs and weapons in his vehicle made his first appearance in court Thursday.

Braxton Allison Hood, 16, of 295 Falling Creek Church Road, Goldsboro, appeared before Judge Arnold Jones in Superior Court because District Court was in conference all week.

He was charged with six Class I felony charges, each carrying a maximum of 24 months in prison.

Hood waived his right to court-appointed counsel and was given a court date of Oct. 17 in District Court. His defense options now are to retain a lawyer or represent himself.

The student was arrested Wednesday on one count of felony firearm on a school campus and four counts of misdemeanor weapons on a school campus.

According to a report from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, deputies received a tip about drugs in a vehicle and were given permission to search the car.

The school resource officer discovered marijuana as well as five different weapons, including a loaded firearm, a knife and brass knuckles.
