Warsaw deputy fire chief charged

WARSAW -- The deputy chief, and treasurer, of the Warsaw Fire Department has been arrested.
Joseph Allen Burgette, 42, has been charged by Warsaw police with five counts of embezzlement.
According to the arrest warrant, Burgette allegedly stole $310,537 over a period of seven years. Between June 1, 2005, and May 5, 2012, he stole tens of thousands of dollars annually -- from more than $19,000 to as much as $66,921. He resigned in May.
Burgette was arrested Wednesday and placed under a $40,000 secured bond, but made bail and was released. He is due to appear Sept. 21 in Duplin County Court in Kenansville.
