Shot through the house
When Charles Martin Best, 31, 635 Pineview Cemetery Road, returned home from work Wednesday, he found that a bullet had passed through his bedroom. A Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said that a high-powered black powder rifle was fired in the direction of Best's home, and that the round penetrated an exterior wall, passed through two mattresses, and embedded in an interior wall. A neighbor said he heard a loud noise and when he came outside there was an odor. No suspects have been reported so far.
Breaking and entering
On Wednesday, Alma Hinson, 48, 800 Antioch Road, came home to find a strange man in her home. Hinson arrived at her door and saw a black man, who according to the Sheriff's Office report, had made entry through a window, standing inside. He got out and ran into a nearby wooded area.
Two vehicles broken into
A car in the parking lot of the Walmart at 2908 U.S. 70 was broken into sometime between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Cheryle Lynette Settles, 55, was leaving from work and found the rear driver side window of her 2006 Honda Accord smashed. Nothing was taken.
In a separate incident, the passenger side window of Noel Smith's 2009 Jeep was broken out and items stolen, between 7:30 and 10 p.m. Thursday. The 17-year-old's vehicle was parked at 2303 E. Ash St., and she told police she didn't see anyone who could have done it. Smith's pocketbook, containing her debit card and license, was stolen. The value of the damage and the property taken was estimated at $370.
House robbed
After being away since 5 p.m. Wednesday, Van Arthur Anderson, 54, returned to his home at 207 N. Virginia St. after 8 p.m. Thursday to find it had been cleared out. According to a report filed by the Goldsboro Police Department, a porcelain sink, refrigerator, ice cream machine, hot dog steamer, scone froster, grease pump and a red push mower were all taken. Thieves even made off with Anderson's marble countertops. The combined estimated value of the property stolen or damaged in the break-in was listed at $8,850.
