The state Highway Patrol has released the identity of a man killed in a car accident Thursday afternoon on U.S. 70 West.

Lonnie Barnes, 44, of Princeton, lost control of his 2000 Mercury shortly before 2 p.m. near the Wayne-Johnston county line, 1st Sgt. Jerry Burton said.

The vehicle veered to the right, left the roadway and flipped several times before coming to stop in a patch of trees. Barnes was not wearing his seat belt, investigators said.

Barnes' mother, Kathryn Adkins, 61, was a passenger in the front seat of the car and suffered injuries requiring medical attention. She was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the accident, investigators said. Traffic was reduced to one lane for more than two hours as emergency crews worked the scene.

Rosewood and Little River volunteer fire departments and Wayne County Emergency Services also responded to the call.
