With the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, approaching, the North Carolina LiteracyCorps is sponsoring a literacy-based service event in honor of the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Students and members of the community will be creating cards thanking local firefighters, paramedics, police officers and military personnel for their sacrifices, which are highlighted in times of peril, yet are often taken for granted when they are going about their daily duties, organizers say.

It was the quick action and courage of such first responders in New York, and Washington, D.C.,  that kept the loss of life from the attack from becoming worse than it was. Hundreds of New York City firefighters, police officers and port authority officers lost their lives trying to save others when the Twin Towers collapsed.

Here in Wayne County, lawmen, firefighters and other emergency personnel put their lives on the line every day and volunteers with Literacy Connections say they want them to know they are appreciated.

Lead tutor and AmeriCorps member Andi DeRoin said the thank-you cards will be sent to the Goldsboro Police Department, the city Fire Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base firefighters. The top submissions will also be printed in The Goldsboro News-Argus to help promote both the first responders and the work of the students in the literacy program.
