PIKEVILLE -- The first of two special night-time meetings of Wayne County commissioners will be held Monday at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Charles B. Aycock High School.

The second meeting will be held Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. at Southern Wayne High School at Dudley.

No agenda for the meeting had been established as of Friday.

The night-time meetings were established in response to unsuccessful efforts earlier this spring to persuade commissioners to switch from morning to evening meetings.

In party-line stands, the Democrats on the board continue to successfully blunt such a change.

However, the two parties reversed roles for the two night meetings with the two Republican board members voting against having the meetings away from the confines of the boardroom.

Republican Commissioner Ray Mayo has questioned holding the meetings in different areas of the county instead of the commissioners' meeting room, where people might normally expect commissioners to meet.

Fellow Republican Commissioner Steve Keen has been concerned that meeting in other locations could mean no radio and television coverage.
