Seven middle school teachers from Wayne County Public Schools were among 25 educators from Wayne, Craven and Beaufort counties to be trained under a math/science partnership education grant at East Carolina University.

The College of Education and College of Arts and Science partnered with the three school districts to provide the program, "Physics IS Essential." The teachers received 84 hours of professional development, including instruction on topics related to physics, interactive hands-on applications and inquiry-based research.

Representing Wayne County were Donna Lee from Eastern Wayne Middle, Pamela Casey from Rosewood Middle, Lori Batten from Greenwood, Andrew Forsleff from Norwayne, Mary Rose Yoo from Dillard, Lynette Wilson from Brogden Middle and Nana Strickland from Mount Olive Middle.

Students from each of the three counties were also invited to attend a week-long summer science camp, allowing the teachers to practice and implement newly designed lessons. Camp participants received scholarships to cover cost of attendance on the ECU campus.

Area students chosen to attend from Wayne County included Brittany Atkinson, Sascha Diggs, Julia Leonard and Jykell McLamb, all from Eastern Wayne Middle, Ryan Johnson, Jake Straughan, both from Norwayne Middle, and Ikia Shepherd and De'Quan Pigford, both from Dillard Middle.
