The News-Argus will collect school supply donations from the community in coming weeks to help get Wayne County students off to a strong start this school year.

The collection, part of a partnership with Communities in Schools, will be Friday, Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., but the News-Argus will keep taking donations until Aug. 20.

"It's a good opportunity for kids whose parents might not necessarily be able to get them everything on their list," said Georgia Gurley, News-Argus director of promotions and marketing. "This is an opportunity for the community to help these kids get off to the right start and do their best when they get back in the classroom.

"And working with Communities in Schools -- we always know that the supplies we collect will be directed toward students and families who are in need. That's a great organization for us to partner with."

Some of the items students need are paper, pens, pencils, notebooks, crayons, glue, scissors and backpacks.

"No donation is too big or too small," Mrs. Gurley said.

And don't forget, she added, tax-free weekend is Friday through Sunday -- a perfect time to stock up.

Donations can be dropped off at the newspaper office, located at 310 N. Berkeley Blvd., next to McDonald's.
