Eugene Aycock won the District 6 showdown between political rookies, receiving more than twice the amount of votes cast for Fran Kasey in the race for that district's council seat.
Aycock received 352 votes to Mrs. Kasey's 142 -- more than 70 percent of the 496 votes cast in the district, which largely lies north of Royall Avenue and Central Heights Road and northeast of North Park Drive.
Aycock had nothing but kind words for Mrs. Kasey, whom he said he had gotten to know well during the last few weeks of the campaign.
"Fran Kasey is a fine lady. If I had lost to her, it wouldn't have bothered me," he said, noting what a community-oriented woman she was.
As far as his win was concerned, he said it was due mostly to his supporters who spearheaded his campaign efforts.
"I had a lot of people speaking on my behalf," he said, calling his win "humbling" and expressing surprise at his margin of victory.
Aycock said he looks forward to working with the city's new city council to continue moving the city forward.
"Goldsboro is my home," he said. "I want the best for it."
Mrs. Kasey said this morning that she was pleased with her district's turnout and excited about what she had learned.
"It was a good experience," she said.
