School system principals, administrators on the move

New principals, assistant principals, and curriculum specialists for the 2012-13 school year have been announced for Wayne County Public Schools.

Administrative changes for principals will be made at Brogden Middle, Dillard Middle, Meadow Lane Elementary, Northwest Elementary, and Rosewood Elementary schools.

Two administrative changes will take place in the system's central office. Former Rosewood Elementary principal David Lewis will be the district's new director of elementary education/athletics. He is replacing Gail Herring who recently retired.

Former Meadow Lane Elementary principal Debbie Ogburn will be the district's new Title I coordinator. She is replacing Lillian Jarman who recently retired.

Lewis has 21 years of education experience and had served in his present position since 2009. Prior to Rosewood Elementary, Lewis was principal at Rosewood High and an assistant principal at Goldsboro High.

Before coming to Wayne County Public Schools in 2003, he taught and later served as an assistant principal at John A. Holmes High School in Edenton. Lewis earned a bachelor's degree in English education from North Carolina State University. He holds a master's degree in school administration from East Carolina University.

Mrs. Ogburn has 27 years of education experience and served in her present position since 2011. Prior to Meadow Lane Elementary, Mrs. Ogburn was as principal at Carver Elementary and Fremont STARS Elementary. She also was as an assistant principal at Greenwood Middle and a teacher at Rosewood Elementary.

Mrs. Ogburn earned a bachelor's degree in education from Kentucky Christian University. She also earned a master's degree in education and a master's degree in school administration from East Carolina University.

The principals, along with Lewis and Mrs. Ogburn, will begin their new assignments effective immediately. Assistant principals and curriculum specialists will begin their assignments August 20.

The new principals are:

* Brogden Middle principal Karen Wellington will be the new principal at Meadow Lane Elementary. Mrs. Wellington has 18 years of education experience and has served in her present position since 2007.

Prior to Brogden Middle, Mrs. Wellington was as an assistant principal at Meadow Lane Elementary and Goldsboro Middle. She also taught math for Durham County Schools, Wilson County Schools, and at Brogden Middle. Ms. Wellington was a North Carolina Teaching Fellow and earned a bachelor's degree in education from North Carolina Central University. She holds a master's degree in school administration from East Carolina University.

* Dillard Middle principal Sylvester Townsend will replace Mrs. Wellington as principal at Brogden Middle School. Townsend has 39 years of education experience and has served in his present position since 2006.

Prior to Dillard Middle, Townsend was principal at Goldsboro Middle. Before coming to Wayne County Public Schools in 2005, Townsend was an assistant principal for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. He also has varied instructional and administrative experiences at the middle school, high school, and college levels.

Townsend earned a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Cheyney State College. He holds a master's degree in student personnel from Slippery Rock State University and a master's degree in school administration from Gardner-Webb University.

* Tommy's Road Elementary assistant principal Sonja Emerson will replace Townsend as principal at Dillard Middle. Ms. Emerson has 35 years of education experience and has served in her present position since 2009.

Prior to Tommy's Road Elementary, Ms. Emerson spent 30 years as a teacher at Edgewood Community Developmental School. She also spent two years teaching students with disabilities at the O'Berry Center. Ms. Emerson earned a bachelor's degree in special education from East Carolina University. She holds a master's degree in school administration from East Carolina University.

* Northwest Elementary assistant principal Charles Smith will be the new principal at Rosewood Elementary. Smith has 21 years of education experience and has served in his present position since 2008.

Prior to Northwest, Smith was an assistant principal at Eastern Wayne Middle and Carver Heights Elementary. He also taught social studies at Rosewood High and Charles B. Aycock High. Smith earned a bachelor's degree in history from East Carolina University. He holds a master's degree in school administration from the University of Scranton.

Administrative changes for assistant principals and curriculum specialists are follow:

* Carver Heights Elementary assistant principal Teresa Hines will serve as the new assistant principal at Northwest Elementary.

* Charles B. Aycock High assistant principal Wendy Crane will be the new curriculum specialist at Meadow Lane Elementary.

* Dillard Middle's assistant principal Karen Stevens will be the new assistant principal at Charles B. Aycock High.

* Eastern Wayne High's assistant principal Carlton Stevens will be the new assistant principal at Dillard Middle.

* Meadow Lane Elementary curriculum specialist Tameka Allen will be the new curriculum specialist at Tommy's Road Elementary.

* Teaching and learning coach Karen Rogers will be the new assistant principal at Southern Wayne High.
