Carlos Gonzalez, 5, runs around under a large sprinkler during Goldsboro's Sprinkler Fun Day at Cornerstone Commons Thursday afternoon. The sprinkler is set up by the Goldsboro Fire Department every Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. during the summer to help residents cool off. Playing in sprinklers is just one way people around Wayne County, as well as the whole Southeast, have cooled off during an oppressive heat wave that has seen a week of temperatures reaching into the upper 90s and low 100s. Temperatures are not expected to drop back into the 80s for another week.
