A brave customer prevented an armed robbery at a convenience store on Grantham Street early today.
Just after 3 a.m., an unidentified black man entered the Kangaroo Express at 901 W. Grantham St. and reached behind the counter, according to Goldsboro police reports. When the clerk tried to stop him, he pulled out a handgun and demanded money.
At that point, a customer in the store allegedly interceded by confronting the would-be robber. A tussle ensued and the robber was wounded when the gun went off.
Police responded to the emergency alarm activated by the clerk and took the suspect into custody. He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital by Emergency Medical Services Unit 41, where he was treated and stabilized.
A police report on the incident did not indicate how he was wounded nor did it give the identity of the person who interceded. It also did not identify the caliber of weapon used.
A call to the investigation division of the Goldsboro Police Department was not returned by press time today. According to the reports, the investigation is ongoing.
