It started with an attempted traffic stop -- members of the Goldsboro/Wayne County Drug Squad signaling to a vehicle on South George Street to pull over.

But when the driver refused to stop -- when he led lawmen on a chase that extended more than three miles and threw something out the car window -- the incident ended in a local man being held in Wayne County Jail under a $1.5 million bond.

Kenyatta Applewhite, 33, of the streets of Goldsboro, was charged with trafficking in ecstasy and possession with the intent to sell and distribute marijuana after the Drug Squad recovered more than 500 grams (slightly more than a pound) of marijuana the man allegedly threw out of his vehicle during the chase.

The chase ended at the intersection of Virginia and Mulberry streets thanks to the efforts of patrol officers of the Goldsboro Police Department.

The unit also seized an additional 3,000-plus grams (more than 3 pounds) of marijuana and about 1,000 ecstasy pills during the incident.

The narcotics had an estimated street value of more than $45,000, according to law enforcement officers.
