Some were stirred by a thunderous crash -- and looked outside to find their world on fire.

Others remember helicopters flying overhead -- how the government locked down a huge portion of a small community in the middle of the night.

But many current residents of Faro were not alive to witness Wayne County's brush with Armageddon.

It happened more than 50 years ago.

So even though the story of the infamous B-52 crash has been passed down through the generations several times since Jan. 24, 1961, state officials will soon ensure that everybody knows just how close the East Coast came to catastrophe.

A historical highway marker will be unveiled June 29 at 11:30 a.m. to forever commemorate the moment two Mark 39 nuclear weapons buried themselves in a swamp just north of Goldsboro.

And among those expected to attend are the pilot who safely escaped the falling plane and three members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team that disarmed the bombs.
