Optimists collecting computers for children

The Goldsboro Optimist Club will hold a Computer Donation Day in the parking lot at Sam's Club Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to collect computers for its new Computers4Kids program. Free popcorn will be given away, and raffle tickets for a new HP laptop computer will be available.
People are being asked to donate the following used equipment that is in working condition:
*laptop, desktop, or tower computers with a 1.4 GHz CPU or faster processor and Windows XP or later operating system -- preferably not more than 5 years old
*17-inch CRT monitors
*15-inch or larger LCD monitors
*keyboards
*mice
*speakers
*power cords and cables.
Printers will not be accepted because of the high cost associated with refurbishing them.
Donated computers will be refurbished by the Goldsboro Optimist Club and provided, at a low cost, to low-income families who have at least one child enrolled in the fifth through 12th grade in the Wayne County Public Schools.
All donated computers will undergo a refurbishing process that includes removing personal data from the hard drive using a special software program that meets the Department of Defense specifications for cleaning data from hard drives, club members said.
After June 2, donated computers can be dropped off at Prudential The McMillen Real Estate Group at 1004 N. Berkeley Blvd.
