Student attacks teacher
A 16-year-old student is accused of assaulting a 26-year-old teacher in a Southern Wayne High School classroom about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Ty'von Oates has been cited with disorderly conduct and assault for allegedly pushing and hitting Anthony Williams.
According to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report, Williams asked Oates to leave the room for using foul language, which prompted the student to initiate a physical altercation.
When a deputy arrived, Williams had his arms around Oates. Williams told the deputy he grabbed the student and escorted him out of the classroom to keep the Oates from continuing to strike him.
Con artist sentenced
A South Carolina man involved in the door-to-door vinyl flooring sales scam was sentenced in Wayne County Superior Court Tuesday.
Tommy Mack, 35, of North Augusta, is one of three men who carried out the scam at the Rosewood area home of an 86-year-old woman on April 21, 2011.
Mack was originally charged with breaking and entering, larceny after the breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods and conspiracy.
He accepted a plea of only the breaking and entering charge.
An active sentence of 5 to 6 months was suspended, and Mack was released under an 18-months unsupervised probation period.
He was ordered to pay $1,200 restitution, no fine and court costs.
Wayne County Sheriff's deputies reported after the incident last year that the three men were part of a group of con artists, known as Irish Travelers Community, located in Aiken S.C.
The men allegedly pretend to sell vinyl flooring to get inside of victims' homes.
During the fraudulent sales presentation in April, one of the men searched the woman's home and stole a large amount of cash.
Mack turned himself into Wayne County authorities Tuesday morning.
On the of the other suspects, Michael Joseph O'Hara, has been indicted by the Wayne County Grand jury and is still being sought.
GPD arrest alleged would-be thief
Deborah Daniels, 56, of 1350 Evans Road in Princeton, was arrested after she allegedly attempted to leave the Spence Avenue Walmart pushing a grocery cart containing $599 of merchandise Tuesday afternoon. According to a Goldsboro police report, Walmart employees confronted Ms. Daniels after she left the store, at which time she fled on foot through the parking lot. She was later apprehended by Goldsboro police, charged with larceny and put under at $2,000 bond.
B&E and larcenies
*Carlina Cobb of Kay Jewelers, at 621 N. Berkeley Blvd., reported the theft of a $179 diamond ring believed to have been stolen by an employee of the jewelry store in November 2011. According to the report, a family member of the suspect returned the stolen item, which was recovered from the suspect. The Goldsboro police investigation is continuing.
*Jamison Thompson reported a break-in at his home in the 300 block of Kelly Springs Road in Dudley that occurred Tuesday. It appeared there was a failed attempt at making entry by kicking in a back door before a propane tank was thrown through a window to get inside the home. Two flat-screen TVs, jewelry and various PlayStation 3 games were stolen during the incident. The value of the stolen property was more than $3,000.
