Seven Springs woman speaks for seat belts

Liza Mozingo of Seven Springs, who was paralyzed from the waist down following a traffic accident three years ago, was to speak this morning about the importance of wearing seat belts during the N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program "Click It or Ticket" Campaign kickoff.
Ms. Mozingo, along with Governor's Highway Safety Program Director Becky Wallace and State Highway Patrol Col. Michael Gilchrist, were to launch the "Click It or Ticket" campaign Monday at 11 a.m. at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Concord.
The program runs May 21 through June 3.
On May 19, 2009, Ms. Mozingo was driving her Jeep along a dirt road when the vehicle fishtailed. She overcorrected, flipping the vehicle three times. She was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected through the driver's side window and landed in a ditch.
A friend happened by the accident scene and summoned help. Ms. Mozingo was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital. Two weeks after the crash, she attended her high school graduation in a wheelchair.
State and local law enforcement officers will increase seat belt enforcement activities and crack down on motorists who are not wearing their seat belts during the campaign.
The "Click It or Ticket" campaign began in 1993 to increase seat belt and child safety belt use in North Carolina. Today, nearly every law enforcement agency in the state participates in "Click It or Ticket," and more than 89 percent of citizens are buckled up.
