The man arrested and taken into custody for the stabbing death of his brother early Saturday morning is scheduled for his first court appearance today.
Alonza Ervin Barnes, 31, was arrested without incident after officers responded to a call at 12:46 a.m. Saturday at 808 N. Virginia St.
Other media outlets have reported that the stabbing was an accident as a result of a fight over a woman.
Goldsboro police Sgt. Dwayne Dean refuted the reports.
"It doesn't appear it was an accident," he said this morning.
Carletha Perry, girlfriend of victim Charles Ervin Barnes Jr., 35, was at the scene of the stabbing and, according to officials, was the person who reported the incident.
Dean said a physical altercation started outside of the home and continued inside where the stabbing with a kitchen knife took place.
Charles Ervin Barnes, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Alonza Barnes was charged with an open count of murder. He is being held at the Wayne County Jail without bond.
