Wayne Community College to offer medical billing this summer

Wayne Community College Continuing Education Services has added two courses to its medical billing and coding offerings that will prepare students for system changes.
The current diagnostic code set used by medical coders and billers to report health care diagnoses will be replaced with the new "ICD-10" sets effective Oct. 1, 2014. According to American Association of Professional Coders that will radically change the way coding is currently done and will require a significant effort to implement.
WCC will offer the "ICD-10-CM Diagnostic Coding System" to prepare health care professionals, educators and students who will be impacted for the upcoming system implementation. Course topics will include history of the system, code structure, general equivalency mapping, guidelines and chapter-specific coding.
The course will combine classroom and online delivery. An orientation session will be held 6-7 p.m. on May 24 and the class is set for May 25-June 30. Cost is $120.
A three-day class will be offered to prepare students to sit for the AAPC Certified Professional Coder exam. "CPC Certificate Prep," scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., May 24-25, will cover diagnostic and procedural coding. Cost is $65.
Two courses required to earn a certificate in Billing and Coding also will be offered this summer. "Medical Terminology with Basic Anatomy and Physiology" and "Medical Billing and Coding with Legal Issues" are online courses taught May 16 through Aug. 14. Cost is $175 each.
