In the Goldsboro City Council District 4 race, the Rev. Charles Williams led his primary by a large margin, according to unofficial results, as his quest for a fifth straight term will continue into the city's general election.

Williams grabbed 72.77 percent of the vote in his district, but said he was just grateful to his constituents for remembering his service to the city.

"I'm just elated right now. I feel like I've represented the city for 16 years," he said, noting that he has always sought to be a voice to all the city's residents, not only those in his district. "I felt like they would forget that so I'm deeply appreciative to my constituents who voted for me."

The vote totals were 668 for Williams, 132 for Tondalayo Clark and 118 for Starr Whitmore.

Ms. Clark, who edged Ms. Whitmore by 14 votes, said she also wanted to thank the voters who placed her into the general election, adding that she felt she could succeed against the long-time incumbent simply by appealing to people's desire to buck the status quo.

"I'm in touch with families, parents and people in the community," she said, touting her career in education. "It's time for new ideas to revitalize Goldsboro."

Ms. Whitmore said she felt she learned a lot from the election process and that the experience would serve her well should she run again. She also said she saw no reason to worry about her district no matter who won in the general election, especially after getting to know her opponents.

"Whoever wins the final election, Goldsboro is in good hands," she said.

The primary date, though, is still to be decided, but will likely be July 17.
