Students hoping to graduate from Wayne Community College this week are wrapping up final exams today and Wednesday, as a record number is expected to participate in the two ceremonies.

Officials said Monday that 604 curriculum graduates will be presented with 159 certificates, 80 diplomas and 467 associate degrees.

The statistics are up from last year, with 557, and 2010, when there were 566, the previous record number.

The curriculum commencement ceremony will be Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Love Temple in Goldsboro. Tickets are required for admission.

Kimberly Massey, the 2011-2012 student government association president, will be commencement speaker.

WCC Foundation chairman John Peacock will present the college's annual George E. Wilson Excellence in Teaching award.

The WCC Basic Skills Program will hold its ceremony on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Moffatt Auditorium.

Tickets are also required for admission, with each graduate provided four guest tickets. Others will be seated in an overflow room, where a live video feed will be shown.

The class has 269 candidates, 221 earning General Education Development, or GED, diplomas and 48 receiving diplomas from adult high school.

The ceremony will feature remarks from Walnicia McNair, a curriculum student who completed her adult high school requirements in December, and the presentation of the Penny Nelson Memorial Scholarship.

Both events will be streamed live, accessible through the college's Web site, www.waynecc.edu, and the college's Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ waynecommunitycollege.
