Construction on Goldsboro's Center Street Streetscape project should begin May 14, the city's planning director said.

The Daniels and Daniels Construction crew should move a trailer to the area early this week, Randy Guthrie said.

St. Stephen's Episcopal Church will reportedly allow the firm to set up its equipment on their property on Center Street between The Little Bank and Direct Carpet Factory Outlet, but fencing, detour and directional signs and additional equipment should begin appearing in the next two weeks.

The actual roar of construction vehicles and moving of earth is expected to begin May 14.

Guthrie and other city officials met with Daniels and Daniels representatives last week to discuss the plans, and Guthrie said information about detours and road closings would come later this week.

The Streetscape project has emerged as the city's signature downtown revitalization project after years of discussion. First a part of the city's downtown master plan, city officials determined it best to perform the renovations in phases, beginning with the 200 north block of Center Street.

The project calls for the renovation of the 200 north block of Center Street by widening the sidewalks and median and creating a path between the roads as well as planting new trees to replace the aging holly trees.

The City Council approved the project in a 4-3 decision March 9 in a vote that awarded the $1.3 million contract to Daniels and Daniels.
