More than 3,000 people have cast their ballots for the May 8 primary during the one-stop early voting that enters its final week today.

Also, Monday, May 7, at 5 p.m. is the deadline for people to return absentee ballots to the Wayne County Board of Elections. The county mailed out 852 absentee ballots.

As of Friday, 3,138 people have voted -- mostly at the Wayne County Public Library site on East Ash Street -- since one-stop opened on April 20. During that time, there were 57 new voter registrations -- people can register and vote that same day -- and 125 updated registrations.

Voting totals for the sites are:

* Wayne County Public Library, 1001 E. Ash St., 2,091

* First Congregational Church, 215 Sleepy Creek Road, Dudley, 235

* Woodmen of the World Lodge 3733, U.S. 117 North, Goldsboro, 812.

All three sites will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Board of Elections officials have said the voting has gone smoothly and that there has been a "lot of interest" in all of the new voting district maps. Each polling site has a person to help voters read the maps.

Sample ballots are posted on the Board of Elections website under 2012 election information. Go to waynegov.com, click on Dept. (A-H) and select Board of Elections.
