Omega Psi Phi sponsoring annual fundraising Miss Mardi Gras on Friday

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. is sponsoring its annual fundraising Miss Mardi Gras that will conclude on Friday at 8 p.m. with a Mardi Gras gala at the Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni Center on Poplar Street.
Four local young women are competing for the title of Miss Mardi Gras and the winner will represent fraternity members for the next year.
Fraternity members have been divided into four groups representing qualities that are the key principles on which the fraternity was founded -- manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift.
Nekesa Matlock is the manhood contestant. A native of Hyattsville, Md., Ms. Matlock is a graduate of Elizabeth City State University. She is employed by the Wayne County Public Schools as a teacher at North Drive Elementary School.
La'Shonda Kates is the scholarship contestant. She is a Wayne County native and attends Wayne Community College. Ms. Kates is an office assistant at RHA Howell's Magnolia Place.
Wilma Ford Hamilton is the perseverance contestant. A Wayne County native, Ms. Hamilton attends Wayne Community College. She is employed by Wayne County Public Schools as an office manager.
Symone Smith is the uplift contestant. Ms. Smith is a native of Wayne County and is employed by Wayne County Public Schools as a teacher assistant at School Street Elementary School.
Tickets to the gala are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. The larger portion of the funds raised will go to scholarships and other community projects, fraternity officials said.
People attending are encouraged to wear colorful costumes.
