The League of Women Voters Book Club will sponsor a reading/book signing by author Jimmy Creech Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Moffatt Auditorium on the campus of Wayne Community College.

Creech will speak on the issue of gays and lesbians being  persecuted by Christians.

An ordained minister for 14 years, Creech became an advocate for homosexual right within the church after a parishioner told him in 1984 about the hurt and rejection he felt from the church.

Creech, who as a pastor of a Warsaw church at that time, was stripped of his ordination by the church because of his support of gay rights.

His book, "Adam's Gift: A Memoir of a Pastor's Calling to Defy the Church's Persecution of Lesbians and Gays," was published by Duke University Press in 2011.

A native of Goldsboro, Creech is co-founder of Faith in America, Inc. He was an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church from 1970 to 1999.

A 1963 graduate of Goldsboro High School, he received his master's divinity from the Divinity School of Duke University..
