Republican Wayne County Commissioner Steve Keen Tuesday filed for a second term representing District 4 on the board.
Filing for the May 8 primary ends Wednesday, Feb. 29, at noon.
A local property developer and former owner of Adam's Auto Wash in Goldsboro and Greenville, Keen spent four years in the U.S. Navy, receiving an honorable discharge as a operations specialist third class.
Keen, a past member and chairman of the Wayne County Planning Board, said it has been an honor and a privilege to serve the people as their conservative voice on the board.
"I have worked to attract jobs to Wayne County by making our county more business-friendly," he said in a prepared statement. "I have fought to bring more balanced representation to the numerous boards and commissions that impact our families and businesses. I have fought to keep our spending and tax rate as low as possible. Finally, I have been clear, direct and honest with you about the challenges facing our county -- something you should demand from all public servants.
"During my three years as a county commissioner, I have sought to take action to solve the important problems facing our county. Unfortunately, I have often been the lone conservative voice in this fight. When I have raised issues, others want to keep 'talking' about them. It's time to stop talking and start doing."
Keen said he filed for a second term because he believes there is much work still to be done if Wayne County is to again be a regional leader in eastern North Carolina.
It is time to stop talking about the challenges facing the county and to start doing something instead, he said.
"I need your help -- and I need reinforcements -- in order to make that happen," he said. "As we begin the 2012 campaign, I invite you to join in our effort to bring pro-active, solution-oriented conservative leadership to Wayne County. I am in this fight to make a difference, but I cannot do it without your help.
"Like you, I love Wayne County. This is home -- it is the county where I raised my family and built my businesses. I firmly believe that Wayne County can once again be a leader and economic center in eastern North Carolina. Our county needs common-sense, results-focused conservative leadership to make this vision a reality. With your help, we will win this election and realize our shared vision for the future of Wayne County."
