Wayne Health Medical Clinic opened late last month with three new physicians and more expected, thanks to the recruiting efforts of Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The new hires are in the area of internal medicine and endocrinology, and all are taking new patients, officials said.

Wayne County has not had an endocrinologist since late 2005, when Dr. Michael Brennan, whose office was part of Carolina Kidney and Endocrine Center, relocated to Greensboro.

Dr. Alfred Okeke, a diabetes and endocrine specialist, previously worked in Monroe. While there, he founded Carolina Diabetes and Endocrine Clinics, which has four offices in North and South Carolina.

He earned his medical degree in Nigeria before moving to the U.S. in 1993.

The two internal medicine physicians are Dr. Catherine Cabungcal and Dr. Randy Swackhammer, both natives of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Cabungcal most recently practiced at Eastern Carolina Physicians in Kinston.

Dr. Swackhammer has a military background, as a staff physician and chief of the internal medicine clinic at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg and deployed with the 325th Airborne infantry regiment to the Middle East as part of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Office hours at the medical clinic, located at 2607 Medical Office Place near the hospital, are weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 587-4940.
