Washer exchange
Bonnie Fournieie, 53, an employee at Dollar Tree on North Spence Avenue, told Goldsboro Police that a white man came into the store and asked to exchange two rolls of quarters for cash on Dec. 30.
After handing over the two rolls in exchange for $20, the suspect ran out of the store.
When the cashier opened the rolls she found out it was two rolls of washers.
Driver not aware of crash
Goldsboro Police stopped a driver just after his car left the road on East Ash Street while approaching Oak Forest Road on Jan. 1, striking a highway sign, the guidewire to a utility pole, crossing Oak Forest Road and hitting a mailbox before returning to Ash Street.
Police said Omeara Demeko Davis, 33, of South Best Street, was not aware he had been involved with a crash. Davis was charged with driving while impaired and driving while license revoked and was held on $1,500 bond.
Church bell stolen
A large bell, estimated to be worth about $2,000, has been missing from Barnes Chapel Church on Rosewood Road since Dec. 30, according to reports.
Earl Patterson, 66, told deputies that between Dec. 23 and Dec. 30, the bell was stolen from its home at the church. Patterson reported that when he pulled into the church parking lot and discovered the theft, he saw a male driver and female passenger, both Caucasian or Hispanic, in a small red SUV pull out from behind the church and leave quickly.
Alleged employee embezzlement
An employee at XTech Internet Cafe on North Berkeley Boulevard allegedly made off with more than $3,000 and deleted security footage to cover her theft.
Nishil Patel, owner of the cafe, said Marquita Danielle Jones, 28, of Airline Place, was working Dec. 30 from 5:30 p.m. until 2 a.m., but took $3,186 -- all of the money for the bank deposit.
Patel reported that she deleted all of the surveillance tapes during her shift and had not been back to work since that night.
Goldsboro Police have charged Ms. Jones with larceny by employee and are holding her on $2,500 bond.
New Year's break-ins
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating two separate break-ins in Dudley on back-to-back nights in which suspects made off with a litany of pricey items.
Cherise Owens, 31, of Woods Drive told deputies that when she returned home Jan. 1 just before 8 p.m., she found her front door had been kicked in.
Suspects reportedly made off with game consoles, an Apple iPad, a laptop, a camcorder, an iPod and iPod accessory. The total estimated value of the stolen goods was nearly $2,200, plus $200 in damage to Ms. Owens' door.
When Barbara Norris of Outlaw Road returned to her home at 2 p.m. Jan. 2, she noticed glass on the kitchen floor from where an unknown suspect reportedly used an item on the porch to break out the window.
Among the almost $9,000 worth of goods stolen was currency and men and women's jewelry including two wedding bands.
Cashwell utility cable downed
Motorists attempting to travel down Cashwell Drive Tuesday afternoon were forced to find alternative routes between Spence Avenue and Eastgate Drive due to a downed cable preventing travel.
Engineer Brandon Sutton with the Goldsboro Fire Department said it wasn't clear how the line became detached from its post, but the incident occurred at about 2 p.m. during a period of high winds in the area.
Engine 5 and a patrol car from Goldsboro Police blocked off the street between Spence Avenue and Eastgate Drive for about an hour to prevent vehicles from becoming entangled in the cable and possibly pulling the utility pole down while they awaited a crew from Time Warner Cable to respond and repair the downed line.
