The Goldsboro/Wayne County Drug Squad began an arrest sweep last week as part of a campaign targeting street-level dealers.

The sweep is the latest phase of a five-month effort to take highly visible drug dealers off the street.

Lawmen said they identified problem areas based on tips received from concerned residents.

Through the use of undercover operations, surveillance and observation, the lawmen have charged 11 people, and last week, six were taken into custody.

Overall, nearly 30 lawmen have taken part in the operation, while a team of 12 have made the arrests.

Participating in the investigation are members of the Goldsboro Police Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the Rocky Mount Police Department and the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team.

Lawmen have said they hope the arrests that stem from the campaign will help ease the worries of residents who have expressed frustration with illegal drug activity in their neighborhoods.

A drug squad member said the street corners, parking lots and other areas where the arrests are being made will continue to be monitored in an effort to prevent the revival of drug activity.

Those arrested on the first day of the roundup were:

*Joseph Bunch, 26, 608 Devereaux St., possession with intent to sell/deliver, sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana $11,000 bond.
