A $9,000 grant from the N.C. Arts Council will be used to send 1,000 local students to a spring performance at the Paramount Theatre.
The cARTwheels II Arts in Education grant will allow the Wayne County Public Schools students to attend "The Parchman Hour" in April 2012 and fund teacher workshops.
"The Parchman Hour," featuring Mike Wiley, takes a look at the struggle for equality, using songs and stories of the 1961 Freedom Riders.
"What a privilege it is to once again work with Mr. Mike Wiley," said Sherry Archibald, Paramount director. "The acclaimed actor and playwright has spent the last decade educating our youth on the importance of African American history as he brings the events of history to life on the stage.
"He challenges us to learn from our past and encourages us to create a better future."
