Organizers had hoped to raise $1,000 for Goldsboro's Community Soup Kitchen at a community Thanksgiving service. Instead, the worshipers donated $1,637.22.

It was more than double what similar services had raised for charities in past years.

The service was held Sunday evening at Madison Avenue Baptist Church in conjunction with St. Luke United Methodist and First Christian -- the pastors of which are all part of CLIFF, or Clergy Living in Faith and Fellowship.

CLIFF pastors had parts on the program, as did representatives of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and the Goldsboro police and fire departments as more than 200 people came to pray, sing, listen to choir music and hear a homily by Madison Avenue's pastor, the Rev. Dr. Bob Fulkerson.

"It was a blessed time, one that brought a sense of unity as people came together from a variety of worship experiences to express gratitude to the Lord and to help feed the hungry on this special holiday," Fulkerson said.
