Wayne Chamber taking Cornerstone Award nominations

The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce announced that nominations are now being accepted for members of the community to nominate a deserving individual for the Chamber's prestigious Cornerstone Award. This award is given annually to an individual that has truly been a "cornerstone" for Wayne County. The dictionary defines a cornerstone as a fundamental building block on which the foundation of something rests.

Created in 1996, The Cornerstone Award includes the following past recipients: Richard B. Moffatt, Hal Tanner, Sr., Clarence "Icky" Peacock, William Dees Jr., Hal Plonk, Bertha Shepherd Wooten, Ollie Toomey, Troy Pate Jr., Jimmie Edmundson, William P. Kemp Jr., Dr. Edward Wilson, David Weil, William H. Bryan, Wes Seegars and Bill Winslow.

"We know there are numerous individuals that fit this description. Individuals that have given their time and dedicated their lives to make Wayne County a better place to live, work, and raise a family, and we're asking the community to seriously ponder who might be the best candidate for the 2012 award," said Ben Seegars, chamber chairman.

This life-long achievement award is presented to an individual, living or deceased that has committed themselves to a lifetime of service for the betterment of Goldsboro and Wayne County.

Among the criteria are:

* Long-term continuous service and dedication to Wayne County

* A significant impact on the overall betterment of the area

* Part of the foundation of the area

* Accomplishments may be in business, education or government

* An individual or a couple. If a couple has performed outstanding services together, each may be awarded a plaque

* Accomplishments may or may not be connected with Chamber of Commerce programs, nor does the recipient have to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce

The Nomination Form and detailed criteria for the award can be picked up at the Wayne County Chamber offices at 308 N. William St. or downloaded from the Chamber's website www.waynecountychamber.com under the Chamber Headlines.

The Cornerstone Award will be presented at the Wayne County Chamber's annual banquet on Jan. 26. The award recipient's name will also be placed on a plaque and inserted into the ground at the Cornerstone Commons in Downtown Goldsboro.

Completed nomination forms should be returned by Dec. 9.
