Applications are now being accepted by the Wayne County Farm Service Agency office for the Emergency Conservation Program that provides emergency cost-share funding for farmers and ranchers to rehabilitate farmland damaged by Hurricane Irene

The assistance may be used for removal of debris from farmland and restoration of livestock fences.

Also, the program is used to treat damages caused by natural disasters that create problems which, if not treated, would:

*Be so costly to repair that federal assistance is or would be required to return land to productive agricultural use

*Represents unusual damage, which is not the type to recur frequently in the same area

*Materially affect the productive capacity of the land.

The sign-up began on Sept. 26 and will continue through Nov. 25. An application needs to filed before the work begins. When making an application, producers will be required to identify the damage on a map, and estimate the cost of the practice.

FSA has not received a funding allocation. Implementing the program without an allocation allows FSA to accept a request for assistance and complete the required on-site inspection. However, the county committee will not consider the request unless or until an allocation has been received.
