Starting Monday, crews contracted through the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin their last round of storm-related debris pick-up along state-maintained roads in Wayne, Edgecombe, Nash and Wilson counties.

Removing debris in counties affected by Hurricane Irene has been ongoing since early September.

So far crews have picked up the following amounts of debris:

*Wayne County - Approximately 450 tons

*Edgecombe County - Approximately 9,557 tons

*Nash County - Approximately 2,150 tons

*Wilson County - Approximately 1,030 tons.

In order to make pickup quick and efficient, residents are asked to place debris along the side of the roadway as soon as possible. Do not place debris in travel lanes or in areas where it will block drainage or reduce visibility for motorists and pedestrians.

DOT officials ask residents to be patient while crews make their way through counties, and to be alert for large equipment in the road that is used to clear debris.

People are asked to keep the following in mind while collecting debris for removal:

* Check your homeowners insurance as often debris cleanup is covered by insurance and arrangements for its collection will be handled by the insurance company;.

* DOT will only collect vegetation debris such as trees and limbs.

* Property owners are asked to cut storm-related vegetation debris into five- or six-foot pieces, if possible.
