The David Williams Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is observing Constitution Week, which commemorates the signing of the Constitution of the United States.

Churches will ring their bells. There will be a display at the Wayne County Museum and chapter members are taking packets of information to local schools.

The DAR started the tradition of celebrating Constitution Week by petitioning Congress in 1955. The resolution was adopted and signed into law in 1956.

The purpose of the celebration is to emphasize everyone's responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution, preserving it for posterity; to inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's heritage; and encourage the study of the historical events that led up to the framing of the Constitution in 1787.

North Carolina sent five delegates to the Constitutional Convention in 1787.
