Deadline for bids on project are delayed

Bids for the first block of the city's Center Street streetscape renovation project will be delayed a week and a day thanks to some changes in the project's scope and Hurricane Irene.

The bids, which were originally due Monday, will now be due at 10 a.m. Sept. 6, still allowing for discussion of the bids at the City Council meeting that evening.

Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. Director Julie Thompson said the delay will give contractors more time to meet the variety of needs that are spelled out in the contract. It will also allow for more competitive bids, especially since many contractors were busy Monday morning with hurricane cleanup across the region.

Planning Director Randy Guthrie said it isn't uncommon to delay a bid deadline, but added that it won't be pushed back again. He said the addendum to the project had led to many questions from contractors.

The contract is for the 200 block of North Center Street, where sidewalks will be widened and the median will be replaced with a wider pathway, more trees and a small park. Similar projects are planned for the other five blocks of Center Street, and the initial estimates put the price for each block's renovations at about $1 million.
