Man killed in U.S. 117 crash

Goldsboro firefighters work to remove victims of a pickup crash early Sunday morning. Alejandro Castanedo was killed in the accident that happened at the intersection of U.S. 117 and I-795. Rosewood volunteer firefighters assisted.
A Faison man was killed early Sunday morning after the pickup he was driving struck a utility pole on U.S. 117 Bypass at nearly 100 mph.
Alejandro Mendez Castanedo, 26, of Suttontown Road, died at the scene of the accident at the highway's intersection with Interstate 795 on the western outskirts of Goldsboro.
The vehicle's only passenger, Hector Delqudo, 44, of Mexico Lane in Faison, was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital by EastCare Life Flight for a potentially disabling injury.
The 1998 GMC truck was traveling southbound on U.S. 117 when it left the right side of the road, where the highway sharply bends at the intersection, and struck the pole about 4 a.m.
Speed and alcohol are both considered to be factors in the fatal crash, investigators said. Goldsboro police say evidence was found inside the vehicle that indicates alcohol played a role in the accident.
A police report listed the speed of the truck during impact at 95 mph.
According to a report, Castanedo did not apply his brakes prior to impact, and neither man was wearing his safety belt.
Police reported no witnesses to the accident.
