Bentonville 'Second Saturday' program Aug. 13

FOUR OAKS -- Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site will present a Second Saturday forum on Aug, 13 with a diverse panel of guest speakers.

The patchwork of history topics includes 19th century quilts and textiles, the state's Civil War Death Study, and the 58th N.C. Regiment, which was one of the few units from the state to fight in the western theater of the Civil War.

Visitors can also enjoy music by the Waterbound Dulcimers of Kinston throughout the day from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

At 11 am "19th Century Quilts and Textiles" by Lynn Lancaster Gorges Mrs. Gorges, a textile historian and conservator in New Bern, will present a detailed account of the history of quilts and textile production prior to the Civil War. At 1 p.m., Josh Howard of the state Archives to learn more about the effort to establish an official count of the North Carolina's casualty count.

At 3 p.m., historian and author Michael Hardy will discuss the 58th N.C. Regiment, which wound up fighting with the remnants of the Army of Tennessee at Bentonville.
