MOUNTOLIVE -- Neighborhoods throughout Mount Olive are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide Aug. 2 for the 28th annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event.
From 7 to 10 p.m., residents in Mount Olive neighborhoods and across the nation are asked to turn on outside lights and to spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.
Mount Olive's festivities will be held at Nelson Street Park from 5 to 8 p.m. A community march from the park to town hall will begin at 7:45.
Local businesses will be serving refreshments, and the police department and local businesses will be passing out souvenirs for the children. Residents are invited to stop by Nelson Street Park but are asked to spend the evening with the residents in their neighborhood.
National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Mount Olive Police Department. It is expected to involve more than 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. Target is the national sponsor.
National Night Out is designed to:
* Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
* Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts
* Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
* Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
