Man charged in forgery of mother's checks

Douglas Carl Oaten Jr., 31, of Southern Plaza Drive in Dudley, has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with forgery of instrument, uttering forged instrument and obtaining property by false pretenses.

The arrests stem from reports made by Oaten's mother in May that someone had passed forged checks against her bank account.

Following an investigation, Oaten is believed to have removed checks from his mother's checkbook and passed that at Food Lion and a bingo place in Mar Mac. There were a seven total checks passed for nearly $500, according the Sheriff's Office.

Oaten was placed in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $ 3,000.00 secured bond.

Chiloda Woods, 22, of Alpha Court, reported that Christopher Jones, 23, of Lime Street, assaulted her in her home and damaged her vehicle.

Nicholas Flaherty, 22, of Evergreen Avenue, reported that someone entered his residence and stole $4,220 worth of video game systems.

Robert Coley, 25, of Maple Street, reported an unknown subject put a gun to his head and robbed him.

Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church on East Ash Street reported that the church was broken into, though nothing was reported stolen.

Jesse Whittaker, of Park Avenue, reported that an unknown subject cut open a window screen and removed her $300 TV.

Jonathan Rafael, of Park Avenue, reported person(s) unkown broke a rear window of his residence with a stone and stole $1,900 worth of electronics.

Bogus fundraiser

The Elroy Volunteer Fire Department is not conducting a fundraiser by selling yard signs sold by Smart Choice Signs. The fire department is in no way affliated with the company, officials said. The department holds one fundraiser a year and solicitors carry identification. If approached by someone claiming to be selling the signs for the fire department, contact the Sheriff's Office.
