Only one of the calls made by the department included a structure fire, which occurred in the kitchen of La Paz restaurant at 335 North Spence Street at 9:54 a.m. on June 22.

According to the incident report, the cause of the fire appeared to started when a crew contracted to clean the hood system above the cooking range had positioned a pressure washer they were using too close to combustible products.

The report continues that the pressure washer ignited paper material that melted the gas line on the pressure washer, which resulted in a gas leak with ignition and enough temperature to set off on sprinkler head.

The sprinkler head extinguished the fire before firefighters arrive.

Firefighters removed the water from the scene and conducted salvage work to restore the property. Firefighters cleared the scene in under 90 minutes.

The seven other nonstructural fire calls included one vehicle fire, one clothes dryer fire, two grass fires and three crop fires.

The crop fire, located near the intersection of East Ash Street and N.C. 111. included about 15 hay bales in a hay field, firefighters said.

The hay bales required three calls from firefighters on three consecutive days.
